Tonberry have four job types. They are: Black Mage, Thief, Ninja, and Summoners.

They are nasty monsters. Many of their moves are amazingly hard hitters.

Everyone's Grudge will deal damage based on how many Tonberry you have killed. Needless to say, this number can get huge.

Throat Stab can reduce your HP to 5% of what you have left in one move!

The Evasion Boost from Sigh is very large.

And it is never fun to get cursed. Words of Bane is no fun.

This spell can be safely soloed by a Blue Mage when you can first learn it.

You should have Eye Drops for Blindness, and Holy Water to deal with Curse if you want to be 100% safe. Do the quest to have your Tonberry Hate removed.

Once you zone into the Yhoator Jungle, head toward the open area at H-10.  In each of the tunnels on the east side of G-10, that lead to the H-10 area, there will be a Tonberry. In the large open H-10 area itself, there are five more wandering about. All in this area are THF or BLM types. Other then the Tonberry, there is no aggro in the area. The Tonberry aggro by sight, and can link.

Once you get a Tonberry in an isolated place where there is no chance of a link, the fights are not too hard. One simply needs to take some simple steps to avoid the bad moves.

To deal with Everyone's Grudge, first make sure you have done the quest to clear your hate. That is a must! When you are fighting a Tonberry, if you call for help before you kill it, you will get no hate. Do this if the Tonberry you are fighting has not used Everyone's Grudge and is about to run out of life. DO NOT call for help if it has used the move. You cannot learn the spell on a monster for which help has been called upon.

It is very easy to avoid Throat Stab. When fighting the Tonberry, do it in the unlocked mode. When you see the message "The Tonberry whatever readies Throat Stab", move away backwards as fast as you can. The move takes a long time to go off, and you'll be out of range when it does. The Tonberry will use up his TP and miss you. After that happens, return to continue the fight. Do not try to stun Throat Stab, if you miss with your stun, you will loose 95% of your HP. It's better and easier to just run away!

If you get cursed, use a Holy Water and return to your fight your fight.

The Black Mage Tonberry will cast ~aga spells, stun them with Head Butt. Silencing the Black Mage Tonberry is a big help. The Thief Tonberry have good evasion. Cold Wave can help deal with it. Using Geist Wall, or Blank Gaze to Dispell Sigh, will make a huge difference if that TP move is used.

The fights should be pretty safe. If you avoid Throat Stab, all will go well.

There are higher level Tonberry to be found in many other areas. They do not make as good targets because of the aggro on the way to reach them. Because there is the excellent lower level camp, these are not recommended.
